Crafting Your Own Artist Date Jar

Hello Creatives!

We are nearing the beginning of summer and if you’re looking for some ways to incorporate your creativity with being outside, I’ve got you!

Today, I’m excited to share a simple yet effective DIY activity that will bring a spark to your creative routine: the Artist Date Jar. Inspired by the TikTok date jar trend and the insightful book "The Artist's Way" by Julia Cameron, this activity is perfect for anyone looking to nurture their creative spirit. Let’s dive in!

Supplies You’ll Need

Before we get started, gather these materials:

  • Popsicle sticks

  • Markers

  • A jar (reuse an old pasta sauce jar if you can)

  • Optional: washi tape, construction paper, stickers, rhinestones for decoration

For those who prefer to shop online, I’ve linked all the supplies here. Remember, purchasing through these links allows me to receive a small comission, but I encourage you to visit your local craft store to keep small businesses thriving.

Step 1: Prepare Your Jar

Begin by decorating your jar. You can keep it simple or go all out with creativity. For my jar, I used a sea glass illusion technique, using food coloring and Elmer's Glue. Don’t worry if it looks messy at first—trust the process! The end result is always worth it.

Step 2: Categorize Your Artist Dates

While your jar dries, let’s plan your artist dates. Julia Cameron’s book suggests dedicating time for creative playdates with yourself to explore your creativity. Identify any barriers that might prevent you from having regular artist dates and think of ways to overcome them. Then, create categories for your artist dates. Here are my four categories for inspiration:

  1. With Others: Activities you can enjoy with friends or family.

  2. At Home: Creative projects that can be done in the comfort of your home.

  3. Try Something New: Fun, new experiences to add spice to your life.

  4. Mindful Moments: Activities to help you slow down and reconnect with the present.

Step 3: List Your Artist Dates

For each category, come up with 5-10 activities. Your artist dates can be anything that invigorates your creativity—going to the movies, trying new foods, or picking up a new hobby. If you need ideas, I’ve created a list of 50 artist dates that you can download here.

Step 4: Decorate Your Popsicle Sticks

Assign each category a different design or color. Write your artist date ideas on the popsicle sticks. If you prefer a neater look, you can print your list, cut it out, and tape the items onto the sticks. I used permanent markers, but be cautious as they can bleed on the wood. Decorate the sticks with washi tape or other embellishments to make them visually appealing.

Step 5: Assemble Your Artist Date Jar

Once your jar is dry and your sticks are ready, place them inside. Create a key to remember what each design represents. You can write this key on construction paper or laminate it for durability. Attach it to your jar for easy reference. Add any final decorations, like a cute bow, to finish your jar.

Bonus Ideas and Upcoming Event

Here’s an idea for an artist date: recreate your favorite fast food meals at home. I use a recycled spice jar to create tags for different recipes, like a Chipotle salad bowl or Taco Bell fries, for endless culinary adventures.
